Is a tonneau cover worth it?
Yes, if you want what is in the bed out of sight, a tidier and partly sheltered bed, weight carried on top or a rack mounted on it. No, if you are buying it to keep cargo dry, save fuel or stop a determined thief: no cover is waterproof, the best owner fuel report is about 5%, and one maker says its locks only deter theft.
What a cover reliably does is hide things. Peragon's own FAQ says its locks deter theft rather than prevent it, and owners say a thief can get into a hard or soft cover. The value is against crimes of opportunity: out of sight, out of mind. A hard cover adds a lock tied to the tailgate; a soft cover adds none, since a knife opens it. Owners who keep tools in the bed add separate locks rather than trusting the cover.
The second thing a cover can buy is function, and that is where more money goes. Hard folders carry 300 to 600 lb on top, from $599 for the Gator EFX to $1,199.99 for the BAKFlip MX4. The RetraxPRO XR is rated to 500 lb with integrated T-slot rails for racks, and latches anywhere along its length. The DiamondBack HD carries 1,600 lb dynamic. Soft covers, from about $200, carry nothing on top.
What it does not do is just as clear. Retrax, Roll-N-Lock, Pace Edwards and Worksport all exclude water from their warranties, so plan for a damp bed after heavy rain. A mechanical engineer who ran most cover types across several Rams found fuel savings closer to 5% at best, too little to pay back the cover. And covers cost you bed: a retractable's canister takes 7 to 11 in for good, and most folded or rolled covers block the rear window when open.
So by use case: for concealment and a tidier bed, a soft cover from about $200 is enough. To lock the bed and carry some weight, a hard folder is the default. For racks, a retractable with T-slot rails. To stand on it or load the roof, the DiamondBack. If you need real security for tools, the guide's answer is separate locks or a bed cap, and a cap costs you the open bed.
