Should I get a hard folding or a retractable tonneau cover?

The retractable's defining cost is the canister at the front of the bed, which never goes away. Roll-N-Lock publishes 8 in for the A-Series and 7.25 in for the E-Series; an installer puts the RetraxPRO XR at about 10 to 11 in, though long flat items can slide under it. In return you get rails flush with the bed, full rear visibility, and on the RetraxPRO XR integrated T-slot rails, unlimited latch positions and a 500 lb rating. List prices on 27 September 2026 started at $2,299.99 for the RetraxPRO XR against $1,199.99 for the BAKFlip MX4 or UnderCover Ultra Flex.

Hard folders are rated around 400 lb (600 lb on the Extang Solid Fold ALX), fold toward the cab to open nearly the whole bed, and unclamp in minutes. The folded stack blocks the rear window. LOMAX is the exception: it does not fold against the cab, so full access means lifting it off.

The warranties differ in a way that matters. The RetraxPRO XR has a lifetime no-cost replacement term, but it excludes water intrusion, is voided by lubricating the rails, and needs registering within 30 days. The MX4 and Ultra Flex carry five years. One 5thGenRams owner returned a RetraxPRO XR after a week for an MX4 while later owners were happier, which is a fair picture of how personal this choice is.
