Best Stove for the Money: Gas, Electric or Induction, and How Much to Spend
For most homes the best value is a plain freestanding range on the fuel you already have, about $600–$1,300. Choose induction if you have or can cheaply add a 50-amp circuit; a well-rated one starts around $1,400. Paying past about $4,000 buys looks and features, not reliability.
Buy a simple range on the fuel you already have, or induction if the wiring is there
The best value depends on your hookup more than the brand. A freestanding gas or electric range with simple controls costs the least to buy, install and repair. Induction is the best cooking performance per dollar when a 50-amp circuit is already in place. Choose among GE, the Whirlpool family, Frigidaire and LG by local service and parts, and skip premium sub-brands if reliability is the goal.
- Electric and gas both ran about 6–7% first-year service at Yale, below induction's 8.7%; electric repairs typically $100–$200.
- Freestanding ranges list for $599–$1,200.
- Base GE gas had the lowest gas service rate (4.8%) at Yale.
- Vent outdoors: gas stoves raise indoor nitrogen dioxide.
- Consumer Reports' top induction range of 2026 at $1,399, ahead of LG and GE models costing $2,695 and $3,815.
- Induction is about 85% efficient and boils fastest.
The five decisions that set your budget
multi source- 01
Start with the hookup you have
multi sourceA gas range needs a gas or propane line plus a 120-volt outlet; electric and induction ranges need a 240-volt circuit (40 amps minimum, typically 50). Staying on your current fuel avoids $250–$900 for a new circuit or $12–$15 a foot for new gas line nationally, and Boston-area quotes for a new range circuit run $2,500–$3,500.
- 02
Gas, electric and induction cost about the same to run
multi sourceAt an hour a day, HomeGuide puts gas at $3–$9 a month and electric at $4.50–$12. Induction is the most efficient (about 85% of energy reaches the pan versus about 32% for gas), but the dollar difference is small enough that running cost should not decide the fuel.
- 03
Freestanding is the value format
multi sourceFreestanding ranges list for $599–$1,200 at one retailer; slide-in and front-control ranges cost 30–40% more for similar features and slide-ins may need counter work. A cooktop plus wall oven costs more still and makes sense only in a remodel.

- Reddit evidence comes from fourteen threads (2024–2026; about 300 comments read), plus a House Digest roundup and GummySearch. It is self-selected, r/inductioncooking skews enthusiastic, and complaint threads skew negative; none of it measures failure rates.
- Yale Appliance's service rates are first-year calls from one Boston-area retailer's own customers. They omit Whirlpool, Frigidaire, Samsung and other brands it sells in small numbers, and they do not capture failures after year one.
- Consumer Reports' full range ratings are paywalled; brand scores come from a June 2025 reprint hosted by LG and the 2026 induction pick from Tasting Table's reporting.
- Unit prices are national typical or listed ranges (HomeGuide, Yale Appliance), not a dated sale snapshot. The only model price is the Frigidaire Gallery GCFI3060BF at $1,399 as reported on Aug 25, 2026.
- Installation costs vary widely by region: national guides put a new range circuit at $250–$900, while Boston-area quotes run $2,500–$3,500.

- No ranges were tested and no specific model is recommended; the guide recommends types and configurations.
- Example models were checked against live product pages on 25 Oct 2026; none was tested, prices are one retailer’s or the manufacturer’s that day, and most links go to a retailer. Several premium induction examples use touch controls, which the guide flags.
