What is the 5-foot rule for hot tubs?
It is shorthand for the code clearances around an outdoor tub. Glass within 5 ft of the water must be safety glazing, and the disconnect must sit at least 5 ft away, within sight and no more than 50 ft off. Receptacles need 6 ft and overhead wires 10 ft, so most tubs land 6 ft or more from the house.
It isn't one rule. The building and electrical codes set several distances around a tub, and 5 ft appears in two of them. Any glass within 5 ft of the water needs safety glazing. Switches and the disconnect must be at least 5 ft from the tub, and the disconnect must also be within sight of it and no more than 50 ft away.
The other clearances push the tub further out. Receptacles must be at least 6 ft from the water, and overhead conductors need 10 ft of horizontal clearance. Fine Homebuilding's practical rule is to keep the tub at least 6 ft from the side of the house, which is where most installs end up.
Plan the site with the electrician before the pad goes in. Distance from the main panel is the biggest driver of the $800–$1,600 cost of a 240V circuit and GFCI panel, and siting a tub too close to the panel or meter is a mistake owners report having to undo.
