What is a mini driver?
A club between a driver and a 3-wood: a head of roughly 200-340cc against a driver's 460cc, a shaft about two inches shorter, and 11-15 degrees of loft. In testing it gives up distance to a driver, so buy one to replace a 3-wood or for tight tee shots, not as a cheaper way to driver distance.
Sources put the head between about 200cc and 340cc, depending on the model, set against the 460cc limit for drivers and roughly 150-190cc for a fairway wood. Golf Monthly gives typical lofts of 11-15 degrees and a shaft about two inches shorter than a driver's. Mini drivers are not new, but several major brands now make one, and tour players use them on tight courses where a driver is too much club and a 3-wood leaves them too far back.
The best published comparison is a small lab: 10 good ball strikers with moderate-to-fast swings hit a mini driver, a driver and a 13.5-degree fairway wood. The driver was clearly longest. Off the tee, the mini beat the fairway wood on ball speed, carry and forgiveness. Off the turf, 77% of mini-driver shots were judged playable against 63% for the fairway wood. The lab concluded that the mini is more a fairway-wood replacement than a driver replacement. A PGA-professional reviewer's numbers fit the same pattern: 280 yards of carry with one mini, against 295 with his driver and 260 with his 3-wood.
For a buyer, a mini driver is an extra club, not a cheaper driver. It makes most sense if your 3-wood is hard to hit off the deck, or if your course rewards accuracy over length. If the real problem is a driver you cannot keep in play, this report's evidence says fit the loft and shaft of that driver first. Both tests used skilled players, so how a slower or less consistent swing hits a mini off the turf is not established.

What Driver to Buy, and How Much to SpendBy Purchasd Research. We used independent robot-and-human testing as the primary performance evidence, manufacturer and retailer pages for prices, specifications and warranty terms, a published used-price guide for depreciation, a nine-retailer trade-in comparison for resale recovery, and owner forum discussion — one Golf Monthly thread and twelve Reddit threads read in full — for real-world upgrade, fitting and durability experience. Test figures are quoted with the outlet, sample and equipment that produced them. Prices are list or observed street prices on the dates given, not transaction prices, and several are post-launch discounts. Purchasd received no manufacturer payment, review units or affiliate consideration for this research. Most of the best-documented testing in this category is published by affiliate-supported outlets, and retailers and fitting chains supply much of the remaining public data; each source is labeled by bias. Purchasd has not hit a single shot with any of these clubs.
