What hybrid loft do I need?
About 19 degrees to replace a 3-iron or strong 5-iron, 22 to replace a 4-iron, and 25 to 26 to replace a 5-iron—then confirm on a launch monitor that the carry leaves a real gap against the clubs on either side.
Loft is a better reference than club number because iron lofts vary by several degrees between manufacturers and generations, and a 4-hybrid from one brand can sit where another brand's 3-hybrid does. The published chart runs 17 degrees for a 2-hybrid through 28 to 30 degrees for a 6-hybrid.
The same lofts overlap fairway woods: 17 degrees against a 5-wood, 19 against a strong 5-wood, 22 against a 7-wood and 25 to 26 against a 9-wood. If you already carry one of those woods, adding the matching hybrid usually creates a duplicate rather than a gap-filler.
Owners consistently describe the working test as a 20-yard step: a club that carries roughly 20 yards more than the iron below it and 20 less than the wood above it earns its place. Anything closer than about 10 yards is a duplicate.

Which Hybrid to Buy, and How Much to SpendBy Purchasd Research. We used independent human testing on a launch monitor as the primary performance evidence, a robot test and a controlled same-loft comparison for the hybrid-versus-alternatives question, manufacturer and retailer pages for prices and warranty terms, a 300-club depreciation study and a used retailer's listings for resale, and owner forum threads — two on the Golf Monthly forums and ten on Reddit — for how golfers actually gap, buy and use these clubs. Test figures are quoted with the outlet, sample and equipment that produced them. Prices are list or observed street prices on the dates given, not transaction prices. Purchasd received no manufacturer payment, review units or affiliate consideration for this research. The testing outlets and buying guides cited are affiliate-supported, and the used prices come from a retailer that profits from both sides of the trade; each source is labeled by bias. Purchasd has not hit a shot with any of these clubs.
