What breaks on a snow blower?
Cables stretch, belts crack and glaze, shear pins fracture on impact, and friction wheel rubber wears out at about 1/8 inch. All four are cheap and visible. The expensive failure is the auger gearbox.
That list is the manufacturer's own, from Cub Cadet's troubleshooting documentation for loss of auger or drive on a two-stage machine, which also gives the friction disc replacement threshold. None of those parts is costly, and all of them can be inspected before buying a used machine.
Construction differences map onto the expensive failure. Ariens fits a cast iron gear case on the Deluxe 28 SHO; Cub Cadet warrants its auger gearbox for five years separately from the three-year machine warranty; Toro removes one failure mode entirely by using hardened gears instead of shear pins. Honda's hydrostatic drive deletes the friction disc.
Two owner practices prevent most problems and cost nothing: non-ethanol fuel in a machine that sits for eight months, and never putting a hand in the chute. The second is the only genuinely dangerous part of ownership.

How Much to Spend on a Snow BlowerBy Purchasd Research. We used manufacturer and dealer product pages for prices, specifications and warranty terms; manufacturer sizing guidance and an independent buying guide for stage selection; manufacturer service documentation for wear parts; an independent tool review for battery performance; owner forum discussion — one Garage Journal thread and twelve Reddit threads read in full — for real-world preferences and failure points; and a used-value reference for resale. Manufacturer material established identity and specifications. Owner evidence was used to identify decision factors and failure modes, never to estimate defect rates. Prices are manufacturer or retailer prices observed on the dates given, before tax, assembly and delivery. Purchasd received no manufacturer payment, review units or affiliate consideration for this research. Most sizing guidance in this category is published by companies that sell snow blowers, and the used-value reference is an unattributed aggregator; each source is labeled by bias. Purchasd has not run any of these machines in snow.
