Is a tankless water heater worth it compared with a tank?
Only for gas homes with high, overlapping hot water demand, soft water and a 10+ year stay. On energy alone gas tankless saves about $127 a year; its advantage depends on lasting 15–20 years.
HVACBase models a four-person household at about $467 a year for a gas tank and $340 for gas tankless, and $1,271 against $1,193 for electric. The extra $1,000–$4,000 install cost takes a decade or more to recover on energy alone.
On UseCalcPro’s assumptions, a gas tank with one replacement totals about $14,400 over 20 years and a gas tankless about $13,000, if it lasts the full 20 years. Hard water and skipped descaling are the usual reasons it does not.
Owners also report the cold-water sandwich, shutoffs below minimum flow and reduced winter output, and tankless units make no hot water in a power outage.

Best Water Heater for the Money: Tank, Tankless or Heat PumpBy Purchasd Research. We used DOE and ENERGY STAR material for sizing and heat pump requirements; an independent HVAC reference model for running costs; contractor and cost-guide ranges for installed and repair prices; manufacturer warranty documents for transfer terms; city utility guides for serial-number dating; and owner and installer forums, a Reddit aggregation, and 18 Reddit threads read in full (about 2,500 top-level comments) for brand sentiment, recurring complaints and reported prices. Three sources were read in full; the rest were read from search excerpts and are marked unverified. Forum evidence was used to find recurring complaints and disagreements, never to estimate failure rates. Prices are published ranges, not quotes, and no specific model was priced. Purchasd received no manufacturer payment, review units or affiliate consideration for this research. Several cost guides earn from contractor leads or product sales, and one brand-reliability source sells anode rods; each source is labeled by bias. Purchasd has not installed or tested any of these units.
