Single-stage or two-stage?
Two-stage, unless your driveway is paved and you reliably get under 9 inches at a time. The deciding factors are surface and depth: single-stage machines scrape the ground, so gravel rules them out entirely.
A single-stage auger contacts the surface, which is what makes it quick and light on a paved drive and what makes it throw stones on gravel. A two-stage rides above the surface on adjustable skid shoes and uses a separate impeller to throw, which is why it handles depth, ice and berms that stop a single-stage.
The price gap is real but not large: $779 for the single-stage in this report against $1,449 for the cheapest full-capability two-stage. The weight and storage gap is bigger — 194 lb for a comparable two-stage against a machine that stores in a 33-inch footprint.
Owner opinion splits on exactly this line. Single-stage owners, including one who has run a Toro 721 in Minnesota for six years, say it is fine for most events; nearly everyone agrees it fails on heavy wet snow and on the compacted pile a plow leaves at the end of the drive. In the older Garage Journal thread, northern owners dismissed pushing 14.5 inches through a single-stage outright.

How Much to Spend on a Snow BlowerBy Purchasd Research. We used manufacturer and dealer product pages for prices, specifications and warranty terms; manufacturer sizing guidance and an independent buying guide for stage selection; manufacturer service documentation for wear parts; an independent tool review for battery performance; owner forum discussion — one Garage Journal thread and twelve Reddit threads read in full — for real-world preferences and failure points; and a used-value reference for resale. Manufacturer material established identity and specifications. Owner evidence was used to identify decision factors and failure modes, never to estimate defect rates. Prices are manufacturer or retailer prices observed on the dates given, before tax, assembly and delivery. Purchasd received no manufacturer payment, review units or affiliate consideration for this research. Most sizing guidance in this category is published by companies that sell snow blowers, and the used-value reference is an unattributed aggregator; each source is labeled by bias. Purchasd has not run any of these machines in snow.
