Buy used when the exact model fits the job, the seller permits a cold and fully warmed test, service history is credible, the deck and hydros are healthy, and the discount is large enough to absorb repair and warranty risk.
Condition, duty cycle, and maintenance matter more than a universal hour cutoff. Confirm model and serial numbers, check both transmissions for leaks and equal pull, inspect the frame and deck, and test every control and safety interlock.
Prefer a dealer trade-in with records or pay for an inspection when you cannot evaluate hydrostatic drives and deck structure yourself. Walk away from a warmed-up machine, unexplained weld repairs, missing identity, weak hot hydros, or an asking price close to a supported new alternative.
