Should you buy a used lawn tractor?
Yes — a three-to-five-year-old mid-tier machine with documented low hours and a serviceable transaxle is the best value in this category, and beats anything new at the entry price.
The steepest depreciation is over by year three. A published valuation method puts lawn tractors at 11-14% a year for the first six or seven years, with entry machines falling faster than mid-grade ones, so a mid-tier tractor bought used has already taken its worst hit while retaining the drivetrain you actually wanted.
Hours matter more than years, because hours are what consume the transaxle. Check the meter against the wear on the seat, pedals and steering, run the machine until warm, and test it on the steepest slope available — lost hill climb when hot is the failure owners report most.
Ask what it was used for. The fastest failures in owner threads involve towing, hauling and added weight rather than mowing, so a machine that only cut grass on level ground is worth more than its hour meter suggests. And check whether any warranty transfers: most do not, though John Deere's S180 cover is a documented exception.
Owner reports back this up: a 2016 X384 with 201 hours sold for $2,800, and a dealer offered a 2023 X380 under warranty for the same money. Avoid websites advertising new tractors at half price; owners identify them as scams.

How Much to Spend on a Lawn Tractor for 3+ AcresBy Purchasd Research. We compared current manufacturer and dealer product pages for prices, transaxle models, deck construction and warranty terms; a published productivity formula for mowing times; a national reliability survey for brand-level durability; owner forum threads — including twelve Reddit threads read in full — for failure modes and service experience; and a used-valuation guide for depreciation. Manufacturer material established identity and specifications. Owner evidence was used to identify failure modes and inspection points, never to estimate defect rates. Prices are dealer or manufacturer prices observed on the dates given, before freight, setup and tax. Purchasd received no manufacturer payment, review units or affiliate consideration for this research. Prices come from dealers and retailers that sell these machines, and every such claim is labeled by bias. Purchasd has not operated any of these tractors.
