Should you buy a used driver?
Yes, in the one-to-three-year band where 53-64% of the price has already gone and the head is unchanged, provided you can verify the shaft specification, confirm the club is authentic and accept that no manufacturer warranty comes with it.
The value case is arithmetic. A published depreciation curve puts a driver at roughly 53% off after a year and 64% off after three, while independent testing puts the performance difference over those three years at a yard or two. A 2024 flagship at $280 is most of a 2026 flagship at $649.
The risks are specification, authenticity and coverage. The shaft is half the club and listings often omit its model, flex and length. Counterfeits exist in enough volume that manufacturers run reporting programs, they are refused service outright, and the manufacturer's own advice is that a low price from an unauthorized source is the warning sign. Warranty generally does not transfer: TaylorMade's two years cover the original owner with proof of purchase, and other brands do not state a transfer policy at all.
Certified pre-owned channels from manufacturers and large used retailers cost more but add authentication and a return window; one major used retailer offers a 60-day play guarantee in store credit, capped at one exchange per club type a year.
Golfers add one inspection the listings rarely mention: the crown. Owners report crown cracks on multi-material heads, including Titleist GT drivers struck off the toe at high speed, and a used buyer has no warranty to fall back on. Golfers replacing old drivers on a $350-$400 budget are steered to two-year-old flagships bought used or through factory pre-owned channels.

What Driver to Buy, and How Much to SpendBy Purchasd Research. We used independent robot-and-human testing as the primary performance evidence, manufacturer and retailer pages for prices, specifications and warranty terms, a published used-price guide for depreciation, a nine-retailer trade-in comparison for resale recovery, and owner forum discussion — one Golf Monthly thread and twelve Reddit threads read in full — for real-world upgrade, fitting and durability experience. Test figures are quoted with the outlet, sample and equipment that produced them. Prices are list or observed street prices on the dates given, not transaction prices, and several are post-launch discounts. Purchasd received no manufacturer payment, review units or affiliate consideration for this research. Most of the best-documented testing in this category is published by affiliate-supported outlets, and retailers and fitting chains supply much of the remaining public data; each source is labeled by bias. Purchasd has not hit a single shot with any of these clubs.
