Should I repair or replace my water heater?
Replace it if the tank itself is leaking or it is more than about ten years old and failing. Repair a younger unit with a single failed part, such as a thermocouple or heating element.
A leak from the tank body means internal corrosion and cannot be fixed. A.O. Smith advises replacing a unit over 10 years old that leaks or runs erratically, and Rheem suggests planning a replacement around year 10.
Rheem’s rule of thumb is to replace when a repair would cost more than half the price of a new unit, and to repair units under about 6–8 years old with no corrosion. That rule comes from a manufacturer that sells replacements, and no independent source states it, so weigh the unit’s age and condition first.
