Which brand of zero-turn mower is the most reliable?
In Consumer Reports' member surveys, Snapper and John Deere earn the best zero-turn reliability marks, and an earlier wave put Kubota first; Husqvarna, Bad Boy and Ariens sit at the bottom of CR's 2025 brand list as SlashGear reports it. None of that rates the prosumer machines in this guide, so at three to five acres the thing to stay away from is a residential-grade drivetrain, whatever the badge.
Consumer Reports is the only large dataset on this question. Its current brand reliability ratings come from member surveys fielded in fall 2023, 2024 and 2025 covering 18,560 gas riding mowers bought new between 2015 and 2025, and predict which brands are more or less likely to have problems in the first five years. For zero-turns, CR's public summary gives Snapper excellent marks and John Deere very good ones. An earlier wave (more than 12,200 mowers, surveyed 2022–2024), as SlashGear reports it, put Kubota first for zero-turns, with John Deere and Craftsman also scoring well and Gravely ahead of Cub Cadet. The full tables are paywalled, no failure rates are published, and Hustler and Toro do not appear in either public summary, so their absence says nothing in either direction.
The bottom of the list matters to this guide. SlashGear's October 2025 report on CR's best-and-worst brand list names Husqvarna lowest, Bad Boy next and Ariens third. Two limits apply. CR says that brand list blends performance, ease of use, predicted reliability and owner satisfaction across four mower categories, so it is not a pure zero-turn reliability ranking. And the Bad Boy examples SlashGear discusses are Tractor Supply MZ Magnum models, not the ZT Elite or Maverick shortlisted here. It is still a real caution about the brand, and it is one reason this guide makes its Bad Boy recommendation conditional on a dealer you trust.
Brand averages also mix very different machines under one badge. The more useful thing to avoid at three to five acres is a drivetrain tier. Hydro-Gear rates its residential-grade EZT integrated transaxle at up to 215 lb-ft of output torque and 900 pounds gross vehicle weight, with an internal filter, against 350 lb-ft and 1,200 pounds for the entry-commercial ZT-3100 with external oil-filter service. Those are ratings, not failure rates, but weekly multi-acre mowing is the load where the gap matters, and it is why this guide sets a ZT-3100-class floor regardless of brand.
Set the drivetrain tier first, then choose the dealer, and let brand reliability break ties. A local shop that stocks belts, blades and hydro parts shortens every repair, and no survey score captures that.
