Lawn tractor or zero-turn for 3 acres?
Lawn tractor if you will tow attachments, the ground has real slope, or the budget is under about $4,000. Zero-turn if the ground is open and level, the property is full of obstacles to mow around, and cutting time is what you are optimizing.
The two machines solve different problems at the same acreage. A zero-turn's speed and pivot make it faster in open ground and far better around trees and beds; a lawn tractor tows better, behaves more predictably on grade, and costs less to buy at the entry level.
Deck width and ground speed determine mowing time for both, and the same productivity formula applies: three acres takes about 81 minutes with a 54-inch deck at 5 mph regardless of which machine carries it.
