Is a golf simulator worth the money?
It can be if you would otherwise pay to play: a third-party cost guide puts a mid-tier build's break-even at about 25 rounds a year against $60 green fees. Owners with long winters report years of heavy use, while those who can play outdoors year-round, or who have to set up a mat and net each time, are the ones who regret it.
The money case depends on what the simulator replaces. At $60 a round, 25 rounds a year is $1,500 of green fees, which is the point at which a published cost guide says a mid-tier build pays for itself. The entry setup clears that bar far sooner: on Purchasd's arithmetic, the Starter's five-year total of $1,500-$3,750 is the price of about 25 to 63 rounds spread over five years.
Count the whole cost, not the sticker. The purchase is roughly 70% of five-year cost; the rest is software, and the value build adds $2,250-$3,750 in plans over five years. Part of the outlay comes back if you sell: complete packages retain roughly 50-60% after two years, according to a third-party price guide.
The use case is the bigger variable. In a 200-comment owner thread, most report heavy, sustained use and lower handicaps. The clearest regret comes from an owner who can play a real course year-round, and from one whose mat and net went unused until he built a permanent room. If the simulator would have to be packed away between sessions, expect to use it less than the break-even math assumes.

How Much to Spend on a Home Golf SimulatorBy Purchasd Research. We compared current manufacturer and retailer product pages, independent review-site testing, owner forum threads (including thirteen Reddit threads read in full on 1 October 2026), and long-term ownership write-ups. Manufacturer and retailer pages established prices, specifications and subscription terms; independent testing established accuracy claims; owner forums and multi-year ownership reports established durability, service and used-market behavior. Prices are list or observed street prices on the dates given, not transaction prices, and several are promotional. Purchasd received no manufacturer payment, review units or affiliate consideration for this research. Several of the best-documented sources are retailers or manufacturers that sell the equipment; each is labeled by bias and, where possible, paired with an independent or owner source.
