Is a home espresso machine worth it?
Yes for someone who will practise or wants one-button lattes daily; beans cost about $0.49 a double against about $0.70 a pod. No for someone who only wants speed: Nespresso does that for less effort.
A manual machine has a real learning curve. Owners in several threads describe a year of sour shots, and several who moved from Nespresso to a manual machine went back. Those who moved to a super-automatic mostly report no regrets.
On cost, beans run about $0.49 per double shot at supermarket prices against about $0.70 for a Nespresso capsule, so the saving builds over years rather than months. A good grinder is part of the price: CoffeeGeek puts a starter setup at about $500 with up to half on the grinder.

Best Espresso Machine for Home: Which Type to Buy and How Much to SpendBy Purchasd Research. We used manufacturer pages for current US prices, specifications and warranty terms (Breville, De’Longhi, JURA, Nespresso); independent and affiliate publications for tests and buying advice (Food Network’s 15-machine test, CoffeeGeek, The Coffee Chronicler, Consumer Reports’ public summary and its pod-machine survey); CHOICE’s owner survey for brand reliability; retailer and dealer guides for maintenance and used-machine checks; and 28 Reddit threads from November 2025 to November 2026, read through treg, for owner experience, prices paid and gift advice. Owner reports were used to find recurring patterns and disagreements, never to estimate failure rates. Prices are manufacturer list or sale prices seen on 5 November 2026. Purchasd received no payment, review units or affiliate consideration from any brand or retailer for this research. Several publications cited earn from affiliate links, and the retailer and dealer guides sell machines; each source is labeled by bias. Purchasd has not tested these machines.
