Is a 3-hybrid the same as a 5-wood?
Close in loft, not in flight or distance. A 3-hybrid at about 19 degrees matches a strong 5-wood, but at equal loft the wood launches higher, lands steeper and carries further, while the hybrid is the more controllable club from rough.
By loft, the published chart pairs the two families like this: 2-hybrid (17°) with a 5-wood, or a 4-wood for some; 3-hybrid (19°) with a strong 5-wood; 4-hybrid (22°) with a 7-wood; 5-hybrid (25–26°) with a 9-wood; 6-hybrid (28–30°) with no common wood. So a 7-wood and a 4-hybrid are loft twins, and a 3-hybrid and a 5-wood nearly are. Iron and wood lofts vary by several degrees between brands and generations, so check the loft stamped on your own clubs rather than the number.
Matching loft does not make them the same club. In the clearest same-loft comparison available, an 18-degree 3-iron, hybrid and 5-wood carried about 205, 227 and 255 yards and landed at 25.2, 28.6 and 33.3 degrees, and the hybrid finished tightest around the target. That test used mid-2010s clubs and one tester on a mat, so trust the ordering rather than the yardages. Owners who carry both a 7-wood and a 4-hybrid describe the same split: the wood higher and softer-landing, the hybrid more piercing and better from wind and rough.
The ordering answers the other versions of the question. Can a 3-hybrid go as far as a 3-wood? Generally not: its loft pairs it with a 5-wood rather than a 3-wood, and even at equal loft the wood carried further. Is a 7-hybrid the same as a 7-iron? The chart stops at the 6-hybrid, which already overlaps a 6-iron to a strong 8-iron, so a 7-hybrid sits around 7-iron loft; the one same-loft comparison found the hybrid launching higher and carrying further than the iron, though it was measured at 18 degrees, not at 7-iron loft.
The practical rule follows: if you already carry the matching wood, the matching hybrid is usually a duplicate. Pick whichever flight that gap needs, not both.

Which Hybrid to Buy, and How Much to SpendBy Purchasd Research. We used independent human testing on a launch monitor as the primary performance evidence, a robot test and a controlled same-loft comparison for the hybrid-versus-alternatives question, manufacturer and retailer pages for prices and warranty terms, a 300-club depreciation study and a used retailer's listings for resale, and owner forum threads — two on the Golf Monthly forums and ten on Reddit — for how golfers actually gap, buy and use these clubs. Test figures are quoted with the outlet, sample and equipment that produced them. Prices are list or observed street prices on the dates given, not transaction prices. Purchasd received no manufacturer payment, review units or affiliate consideration for this research. The testing outlets and buying guides cited are affiliate-supported, and the used prices come from a retailer that profits from both sides of the trade; each source is labeled by bias. Purchasd has not hit a shot with any of these clubs.
