How accurate is a home golf launch monitor?
Published tests put good consumer units within about 2-4% of a Trackman on carry distance indoors, which is more consistent than the golfer using them; the meaningful differences are in club data and in how each technology behaves in a short room.
Carl's Place tested the Garmin R50 indoors against a Trackman 4 over 10 shots per club and recorded carry 1.65-4.01% short across driver, 6-iron and pitching wedge, with ball speed within 0.82% on driver and spin differing by 7.27%. An independent review of the $1,599 Square Omni found ball speed and spin almost identical to Trackman on mid-range shots roughly 90% of the time.
Technology matters more than price below $3,000. Camera-based units read the ball at impact and work in short rooms; radar watches ball flight, needs about 16 feet of indoor depth, and owner forums argue it handles sidespin on off-center strikes less reliably, which is exactly what practice is meant to reveal. Metallic stickers or RCT balls improve indoor radar spin at the cost of a consumable.
Spin is the number to distrust first. It is the hardest measurement for any consumer unit and shows the widest gaps in published comparisons.
Owner side-by-sides disagree more than published tests. Some R50 owners report carries 15-20% off a GCQuad or Trackman indoors; others find it close and blame slower swings into a net. Ball speed is the number to compare, because every unit measures it reliably.

How Much to Spend on a Home Golf SimulatorBy Purchasd Research. We compared current manufacturer and retailer product pages, independent review-site testing, owner forum threads (including thirteen Reddit threads read in full on 1 October 2026), and long-term ownership write-ups. Manufacturer and retailer pages established prices, specifications and subscription terms; independent testing established accuracy claims; owner forums and multi-year ownership reports established durability, service and used-market behavior. Prices are list or observed street prices on the dates given, not transaction prices, and several are promotional. Purchasd received no manufacturer payment, review units or affiliate consideration for this research. Several of the best-documented sources are retailers or manufacturers that sell the equipment; each is labeled by bias and, where possible, paired with an independent or owner source. Purchasd has not physically tested any of this equipment.
