Gas or diesel for a lawn tractor?
Gas, unless you are putting serious annual hours on the machine. Diesel starts around $12,399 against $3,499-$5,799 for gas, and three acres of weekly mowing is roughly 30 mowing hours a season — nowhere near the duty cycle that repays the premium.
Diesel's advantages are fuel economy and engine longevity. Owner reports support the first directly: one Kubota GR2120 owner described having to refuel a gas tractor partway through mowing two acres and no longer needing to.
The costs are the purchase price, dearer fuel and filters, stricter service intervals and fewer local shops willing to work on it. One owner also notes the GR2120 lacks the rear suspension of the older TG1860, which matters on rough ground.
The honest reasons to buy diesel are several hundred hours a year, a 20-year ownership plan, or wanting the brand that topped a 12,200-mower reliability and satisfaction survey. Mowing three acres a week is not, by itself, one of them.

How Much to Spend on a Lawn Tractor for 3+ AcresBy Purchasd Research. We compared current manufacturer and dealer product pages for prices, transaxle models, deck construction and warranty terms; a published productivity formula for mowing times; a national reliability survey for brand-level durability; owner forum threads — including twelve Reddit threads read in full — for failure modes and service experience; and a used-valuation guide for depreciation. Manufacturer material established identity and specifications. Owner evidence was used to identify failure modes and inspection points, never to estimate defect rates. Prices are dealer or manufacturer prices observed on the dates given, before freight, setup and tax. Purchasd received no manufacturer payment, review units or affiliate consideration for this research. Prices come from dealers and retailers that sell these machines, and every such claim is labeled by bias. Purchasd has not operated any of these tractors.
