Do you need a separate grinder for espresso?
Not to start: an all-in-one’s built-in grinder works for beginners. But a separate espresso grinder, from about $170–$300, makes a bigger difference to taste than a pricier machine.
CoffeeGeek budgets up to half of a starter setup for the grinder and names the MiiCoffee DF54 (about $229), Baratza Encore ESP Pro (about $279) and Breville Smart Grinder Pro (about $169) as espresso-capable budget picks. A drip grinder will not grind fine enough.
Built-in grinders like the Barista Express’s are fine for newcomers and many owners defend them, but they are the most common complaint as skills grow. A separate grinder also carries over to the next machine.

Best Espresso Machine for Home: Which Type to Buy and How Much to SpendBy Purchasd Research. We used manufacturer pages for current US prices, specifications and warranty terms (Breville, De’Longhi, JURA, Nespresso); independent and affiliate publications for tests and buying advice (Food Network’s 15-machine test, CoffeeGeek, The Coffee Chronicler, Consumer Reports’ public summary and its pod-machine survey); CHOICE’s owner survey for brand reliability; retailer and dealer guides for maintenance and used-machine checks; and 28 Reddit threads from November 2025 to November 2026, read through treg, for owner experience, prices paid and gift advice. Owner reports were used to find recurring patterns and disagreements, never to estimate failure rates. Prices are manufacturer list or sale prices seen on 5 November 2026. Purchasd received no payment, review units or affiliate consideration from any brand or retailer for this research. Several publications cited earn from affiliate links, and the retailer and dealer guides sell machines; each source is labeled by bias. Purchasd has not tested these machines.
