Do I need a hybrid?
If you have a gap between your longest comfortable iron and your fairway wood, and you play from imperfect lies, yes. If your bag already covers those yardages, or you strike long irons well and want flight control, no—and tour usage is not a guide for either answer.
Hybrid usage among the top 20 PGA Tour players has fallen from roughly 12 to 15 fifteen years ago to three today, driven by draw bias that elite players dislike and an 11% decline in approaches from beyond 200 yards. Neither reason transfers to a mid-handicap golfer, and the publication reporting the trend still recommends amateurs combine two or three long-game options rather than copy it.
In the clearest same-loft comparison available, three clubs at 18 degrees carried about 205 yards (3-iron), 227 (hybrid) and 255 (5-wood), with landing angles of 25.2, 28.6 and 33.3 degrees. The hybrid produced the tightest dispersion around the target. Read that as the hybrid being the control option between a flight-first long iron and a height-first fairway wood.
Owner threads split the same way. Golfers carry anywhere from none to five, and those who drop hybrids usually do so because the club duplicated a distance they already had, not because it performed badly. On Reddit the most common alternative is a 7-wood, preferred for height and soft landings, while owners keep the hybrid for rough and wind. Decide by the gap, not by the category.

Which Hybrid to Buy, and How Much to SpendBy Purchasd Research. We used independent human testing on a launch monitor as the primary performance evidence, a robot test and a controlled same-loft comparison for the hybrid-versus-alternatives question, manufacturer and retailer pages for prices and warranty terms, a 300-club depreciation study and a used retailer's listings for resale, and owner forum threads — two on the Golf Monthly forums and ten on Reddit — for how golfers actually gap, buy and use these clubs. Test figures are quoted with the outlet, sample and equipment that produced them. Prices are list or observed street prices on the dates given, not transaction prices. Purchasd received no manufacturer payment, review units or affiliate consideration for this research. The testing outlets and buying guides cited are affiliate-supported, and the used prices come from a retailer that profits from both sides of the trade; each source is labeled by bias. Purchasd has not hit a shot with any of these clubs.
